SUMMARY:Gallery Tours of Field Notes: Artists Observe Nature\, and Out of the Vault: Art History 101 ♿
DESCRIPTION:Not surprisingly\, artists have looked to the natural world for inspiration for millennia. And\, since the turn of the 20th century\, there have been significant moments in which artists have sought to mimic the forms and patterns of nature in glass. Field Notes: Artists Observe Nature begins with works from the Art Nouveau period\, roughly between 1890 and 1910\, centered in France during the Belle Époque. The movement’s signature focus on blossoms\, birds\, and insects combined with sinuous organic tendrils was a reaction against the academic style and historicism of the previous century. These stylistic markers shone with particular brilliance in the decorative and applied arts and architecture. The style reached its apogee at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1900\, where the Art Nouveau interpretations in glass by Émile Gallé\, René Lalilque\, and the Daum Brothers were introduced. \nMore than a century later\, contemporary glass artists have been similarly inspired by the natural world as a focus in their work. Included in this exhibition is the series Native Species by William Morris. In this body of work\, Morris used the hot shop metaphorically as a walk through a Pacific Northwest forest\, creating thirty-eight vessels with applied hot-sculpted pinecones\, pine needles\, deciduous leaves\, and birds. Vittorio Costantini created a series of three hundred lampworked glass insect specimens\, as etymologically correct possible\, to rival an arthropod collection at a natural history museum. Joey Kirkpatrick and Flora C. Mace have devoted much of their studio practice to the assiduous observation of nature. They have advanced the tradition of ornithological illustration—inspired by the likes of John James Audubon and John Gould — to literally “draw” birds in glass powder on glass “pages.” They have also collected botanical specimens and developed a means to preserve them in composite and glass. These works are similar to traditional herbaria specimens\, but remarkably retain the true colors of the plant. These contemporary artists in no way imitate the style of Art Nouveau\, but their fascination with forms in nature are sympathetic to their artistic forebears. \nThe exhibition is called Field Notes\, in reference to the practice of natural historians\, professional and amateur\, recording observations while being in nature. The innately curious artists in this exhibition have trained their prodigious skills in glass in the same way\, honoring the natural world in their work\, and reminding the viewer of the marvelous phenomena outside of the studio walls. \nExhibiting Artists: Leopold Blaschka\, Rudolph Blaschka\, Vittorio Costantini\, Daum Frères (also known as Daum Nancy)\, Kathleen Elliot\, Émile Gallé\, Deborah Horrell\, Malia Jensen\, René Lalique\, Suzanne Lalique-Haviland\, Flora C. Mace/Joey Kirkpatrick\, Debora Moore\, William Morris\, Alexis Rockman\, Raven Skyriver\, Paul Stankard\, Amalric Walter \nOut of the Vault: Art History 101 \nAs a material\, glass is ubiquitous. However\, it is more than just the screen on your smartphone. Glass is an artistic medium\, capable of using a vibrant visual language to convey powerful ideas about who we are\, and how we feel about the world around us. \n\nLike painters with a palette\, glass artists harness the unique qualities of molten glass to make artwork capable of telling the same stories art has been telling for centuries. Glass can create landscapes that represent the world around us; reflect how we see ourselves and others in portraits; compose still lives that discuss our relationship to our material culture; or be sculpted in abstract works that convey emotion and ideas. \nOut of the Vault: Art History 101 takes visitors on a visual journey through the four basic pillars of art history: landscape\, portraiture\, still life\, and abstraction\, showcased through new and significant acquisitions from the Museum’s collections.

SUMMARY:Open Artist Studio: Richard Royal Studio
DESCRIPTION:Richard Royal\, a native of the Northwest and resident of Seattle\, is recognized internationally as one of the most skilled and talented glassblowers in the studio glass movement. His sensitivity and natural affinity towards the material reveal themselves within his extensive body of work.  Richard’s artistic approach combines sensuality\, fluidity and bold abundance to deliver gracefully attenuated pieces that speak of their own elegance and sculptural verticality.     Royal began working as a hot glass sculptor in 1978 at the Pilchuck Glass School\, located north of Seattle\, in the foothills of the Cascade Mountain Range.   After spending a number of years as a ceramist\, the challenge of the material and the birth of a new artistic movement appealed to the young artist.  Royal worked for several years as one of Dale Chihuly’s main assistants\, building skill\, exploring the limits of the material and developing an intimacy with glass as an expressive creative medium.  Working with Dale and other creative powerhouses such as Billy Morris and Benjamin Moore allowed Richard to explore diverse approaches to making.  This background enabled Royal to shape his own unique voice and consequently led to his emergence in the art market in the early 1980’s.  Royal has since been a prolific independent artist exhibiting work internationally in both solo and group exhibitions for the past thirty years.  Royal’s work is included in renowned public and private collections worldwide.  His work is found in such noteworthy museum collections as The Mint Museum of Art + Design (Charlotte\, North Carolina)\, The High Museum (Atlanta\, Georgia)\, the New Orleans Museum of Art  (Louisiana)\, The Tampa Museum of Art (Tampa\, Florida)\, and the Daiichi Museum (Nagoya\, Japan).  Royal was one of the first Artists-in-Residences at the Waterford Crystal Factory (Ireland) and he continues to teach as both a guest artist and faculty member at various universities and the Pilchuck Glass School.  His artwork is also included in the SAFECO Collection\, PricewaterhouseCoopers\, IBM\, and the Westinghouse Corporation.

SUMMARY:Gregory Lastrapes Art Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Rooted in 20th-century Swedish glass traditions—especially those of Orrefors\, Transjö Hytta\, and Kosta—my work combines technical precision with a unique combination of natural motifs and visual storytelling. Text and symbolic imagery are central to my practice\, allowing me to explore emotional and political narratives within the formal rigor of techniques like Graal and Ariel. \n

SUMMARY:Sue Kim and Zeke Spier Demo ♿
DESCRIPTION:Mini Mart City Park is pleased to host Sue Kim and Zeke Spier for a flameworking demonstration in our main gallery space. Kim and Spier are partners and glassblowers living in Burien\, WA. They collaborate in both flameworking and hot shop glass blowing. They are inspired by the unseen and lesser understood parts of natural systems along with the material itself. They love glass and strive to make objects that capture its fluid and optical qualities. \nPratt Fine Arts Center is their third place. They both learned glassblowing there and now teach a borosilicate cup-making workshop when they’re not in the hot shop. They have also studied at Pilchuck Glass School. Their work can be found at boutiques around Seattle and the Museum of Glass gift shop. \nTheir demonstration will take place in the main gallery space where Kim and Spier will showcase some of their more botanical motifs consistent in their respective practices. This demonstration compliments Mini Mart City Park’s current exhibition of photographs on glass by local artist\, Winifred Westergard on view through Nov 16\, 2025.

SUMMARY:Seymour Stained Glass ♿
DESCRIPTION:Karen Seymour finds that working with glass allows her to give functional form to the color and light she finds in nature. She has been teaching her glass-on-glass appliqué process for over 20 years and has written a couple of books on it. Getting a kiln in 2013 allows her to also explore kiln-forming techniques. How different temperatures can be used to create different textures is a recurring focus in her work. She currently volunteers with the Pacific Northwest Glass Guild.

SUMMARY:Open Artist Studio: Radiant Neon ♿
DESCRIPTION:Alleson returns to Belltown for her solo show\, The Maiden Crone\, at Slip Gallery. \nThe Maiden Crone is both a gallery exhibition and a ticketed immersive experience. Alleson will demo glass bending in Slip Gallery during Refract 2025! The gallery is free and open to the public. Tickets for the neon immersive experience go on sale September 8th at 10am Pacific. \nInformation on the immersive experience  \nThe Maiden Crone takes participants on a journey through a woman’s triple goddess archetype while the world crumbles. It tells the story of the painful past of maidenhood that she emotionally alchemizes into strength only the Crone can wield.  \nDespite the hopelessness around her\, she can see a better future glowing through the cracks of the world’s ruin – and it’s worth the work to get there. Out of the rubble of her life\, she moves through the world as a self-ordained Crone: an often-silent partner\, healer\, and a grounding source in this new world.  \nThe Maiden Crone is an invitation to visit this bright future – a place to ignite a lasting promise of hope within visitors. An explorable world to find the crone within so we may build a beautiful world again. \nClick here for more information. \nOpen on Sunday\, October 19th as well.
