DESCRIPTION:Northwest Designer Craftartists (NWDC) was founded in 1954 to promote excellence of design and craftsmanship and to stimulate public appreciation and interest in fine craft. Artists in Washington\, Oregon\, Idaho\, Montana and Alaska\, who work professionally in clay\, wood\, glass\, metal\, fiber\, and/or mixed media\, are members.  \nTimed to coincide with REFRACT: The Seattle Glass Experience\, the glass installation brings together work that honors Seattle’s internationally recognized glass movement.  \nJohn de Wit: \n“When I began my art journey 35 years ago\, glass as a medium was still considered a craft material. My professors at the time were clay artists. It was an unlikely union but\, with time\, glass matured as my material of choice. Along the way I have incorporated and developed techniques to allow dimension and uniqueness to the glass possibility. \nI have primarily engaged myself for the last 25 years using the vessel as a canvas\, using its sculptural potential to pivot the viewer beyond the commonplace. My interest is in the container as the emblem of domestic activity and by applying an abstracted functionality\, creating a surface for narrative and decorative application; and expanding the context of purpose. \nWhat I draw inspiration from is quite varied: African objects\, Japanese and Korean Ceramics\, Persian and Indian metalwork. Among contemporary artists\, the painters Motherwell\, Frankenthaler\, and Rauschenerg and the sculptor Martin Puryear are the masters who I appreciate. To describe a theme or thread in my work\, I would suggest that it has been the discipline to pursue a road less traveled; Many of the techniques I use are a result of my own development. \nCombining the painting techniques I have developed with hybridized Swedish and Italian glass blowing processes\, the vessels and objects I have produced reflect an interest in glass transcending its common purpose and achieving a sculptural possibility.” \n  \nCrista Van Slyck Matteson: \nHer latest installation\, Diatom Meadow\, was included in the Corning Museum of Glass’ prestigious\, New Glass Review 44. Collaborating with a climate scientist\, Crista interpreted his research about coastal erosion in the Skagit Valley to create a large-scale glass installation\, for the Museum of Northwest Art in La Conner\, WA. \nIn 2024 Crista taught at the international\, Pilchuck Glass School\, and Pratt Fine Art Center. In 2025 she will teach at Corning Museum\, in New York\, and have a solo exhibition\, titled The Land of Falling Water.  Her Glass Diatom Costume will make its debut in the Glass Art Society’s Glass fashion show in New York\, in 2026. \nAfter studying at California College of Art\, she began her career in Costume Design. With Merit Scholarships\, Crista continued her education attending Gage’s Sculpture Atelier\, Pilchuck\, and Pratt\, studying painting\, metals\, printmaking\, kiln cast\, flameworked and hot cast glass. \nShe has been awarded a Collector’s Choice Award at Habatat Gallery’s International Exhibit\, the Skills Artistry Award at Pratt’s Fine Art Auction\, Juror’s Choice Awards at Mesa Contemporary Art Museum\, the Schack Art Center\, Tacoma College Gallery\, and Pratt’s Auction. Van Slyck Matteson’s work is shown in museums and galleries across the US. She is represented by the Museum of Glass store in Washington\, the Duncan McClellan Gallery in Florida and the Bainbridge Museum of Art store in Washington. \n  \nKait Rhoads \n“My love of living things was encouraged\, so that from the very beginning I was able to develop that sense of wonder\, of awe\, that can lead to spiritual awareness.” –Jane Goodall \nMy work is inspired by nature and informed by memory.  And\, three oceans—the Caribbean\, the Indian and the Pacific–delineate the imaginative boundaries of my practice. \nI grew up on the water of the Caribbean in a ship with my family where my deep affinity for biological systems began. I lived surrounded by nature; the liquid light and aquatic life imprinted upon my senses. The sculptures I create emanate from my early experiences within and curiosity about the natural world. While exploring the waters around Bali\, I experienced the extraordinary biodiversity and extensive architecture of coral colonies there. This has been a deep influence on my sculptural forms and process of making. \nThe cold\, deep green waters of Puget Sound are a more recent source of inspiration in my work.  Since moving to the Northwest over two decades ago\, my fascination extended from coral colonies to kelp forests. Seaweed’s pliable forms continually inspire me—they stretch up from the depths\, undulate in the shallows\, and lie on tidal surfaces. Aquatic life infuses my sculptures with animated forms\, sparkling surfaces and faceted exoskeletons. \nMy method of construction mirrors how my life has formed me\, with individual elements woven together to create a strong whole. I consider the individual units\, conical hexagonal forms known as hollow murrine\, as architectural elements that fit together to create a fluid or floating object. The concept of the work develops slowly\, and the production of a complicated piece can take months to years to complete. \nI desire my work to be emotionally affective—that it evokes for audiences a similar sense of wonder in our blue planet that continues to inspire me. And even\, perhaps\, to instill a desire to conserve our fragile aquatic ecosystems. \n  \nDick Weiss (Curator)  \nWeiss was born in Everett\, Washington\, and earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Yale University. He began teaching at Pilchuck Glass School in 1982 and has completed commissions for the Bellevue Art Museum\, Washington\, the Port of Shanghai\, Shanghai\, China\, the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport\, Washington\, and the University of Washington\, Seattle. His work is included in impressive collections worldwide\, including the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Corning Museum of Glass in New York.

DESCRIPTION:Installed in the Seattle Convention Center’s Summit exterior windows is Proto Kelp\, an installation by Kait Rhoads\, a celebration of kelp as a foundational species. The artwork is made of sisal rope and blown glass tubes that have publicly generated words of appreciation for kelp engraved onto them. SUMMARY:Bronson Shonk | On Perspective ♿
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Traver Gallery Ship Canal location to see On Perspective\, a new exhibition of dimensional paintings by Seattle-based artist Bronson Shonk. \nFor this exhibition\, Shonk paints directly on multiple layers of glass\, laminating them together to form works that hover between painting and sculpture. The resulting pieces suspend painted flowers in a transparent depth that amplifies their color and form. Each work becomes at once specimen and memory\, an attempt to hold still something that is otherwise fleeting. \n  \n“Perspective is not only a set of rules for representing depth\,” Shonk explains\, “but also a space where perception itself can shift. Just as my image of a flower deepens the longer I observe it\, my understanding of people and experiences also changes over time. These works are about honoring that layered way of seeing.” \nIn On Perspective\, Shonk debuts 14 new glass paintings that capture the bulbous volume of hydrangeas\, the gesture of blooms\, and the clustered delicacy of goldenrod. Working directly from observation\, he approaches each subject with a precision that reflects both his training in environmental science and his past career as a data scientist. His glass paintings carry forward traditions of the Japanese landscapes of Hokusai and the dynamism of Italian Futurism\, while proposing a contemporary reflection on color\, time\, and perception. His practice bridges analytic and visual inquiry\, asking how we record change across time and how memory shapes what we see. \n  \nBronson Shonk (b. Atlanta\, Georgia) holds an International Baccalaureate Diploma in Visual Art and studied Environmental Science and Studio Art at the University of Vermont. After moving to Seattle\, Shonk worked as a data scientist for four years before committing full-time to his artistic practice. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally\, including the Seattle Art Fair\, Homo Faber in Venice\, and Art Miami. His work is included in numerous private collections\, such as The Haskell Collection\, and has been featured in Whitehot\, Glass Quarterly\, and Luxe. He has been a resident at Vermont Studio Center. Shonk lives and works in Seattle\, Washington.

DESCRIPTION:Experience glass art that can only be seen at the world premiere exhibition of The MiG-21 Project\, South African artist Ralph Ziman’s 5-year\, multidisciplinary project transforming a decommissioned Cold War era\, Soviet-designed MiG-21 fighter jet into a stunning work of art entirely covered in tens of millions of colorful glass beads. The re-imagined jet turns an icon of violence into a symbol of resilience and collaboration. The MiG-21 Project is the culmination of Ziman’s Weapons of Mass Production Trilogy\, a 12-year project inspired by the artist’s experiences growing up in Apartheid South Africa and realized by teams on two continents—Ziman and his team in Los Angeles in collaboration with Southern African beadwork artisans. \n“The aim of The MiG-21 Project\,” said Ziman\, “is to take the most mass-produced supersonic fighter aircraft and to turn it from a machine of war into something that looks beautiful and changes the meaning of it.” \nIn addition to the beaded jet\, the exhibit includes original artwork\, Afrofuturistic flight suits designed and crafted by the artist and his team\, glass beaded panel artworks\, large scale photographs\, videos\, and interactives. SUMMARY:Museum of Glass Hot Shop Visiting Artist Åsa Sandlund ♿
DESCRIPTION:Artist Åsa Sandlund will be making work in the Museum Hot Shop. Born in Stockholm\, Sweden\, Åsa studied in France and England\, spent two years at the Sorbonne\, and earned her BFA at Beckmans School of Design. She began her career as an art director at Lowe-Brindfors\, working on accounts like Ikea and Saab. Her role as a design assistant at Kosta Boda earned her a scholarship to the Pilchuck Glass School.  \nÅsa immigrated to the U.S. in 1995 and joined Nordstrom as a Graphic Designer and Art Director. She rose through various creative leadership roles and now serves as the Senior Creative Director\, overseeing Nordstrom’s brand strategy and identity across all channels. Her work has earned numerous awards\, including RAC Gold and AIGA\, and she has authored a book on typography.  \nIn addition to her corporate role\, Åsa collaborates with her husband\, glass artist Preston Singletary\, and is an accomplished glass artist herself. Her work has been exhibited in galleries in the U.S. and abroad and featured in publications like New Glass Review and The New York Times. Åsa have served on advisory boards for IslandWood\, The Pilchuck Glass School\, Artist Trust\, and the University of Washington’s professional advisory council in design.

DESCRIPTION:Vetri presents Glasscape\, a two-person exhibition of new glass works by Andi Kovel and Justin Parker. Longtime collaborators and co-founders of Esque Studio\, Kovel and Parker bring distinct yet complementary approaches to glass\, continuing a decades-long dialogue rooted in experimentation\, technical mastery\, and conceptual inquiry. Using transparency\, color\, and layered construction\, Kovel’s new sculptures reimagine landscape through forms that suggest shifting horizons\, geological strata\, and symbolic terrains. Alongside Kovel\, Parker introduces intricate glass panels designed to harness and project light. Together\, their work highlights the versatility of glass in sculptural form and as a medium of light. \nAlso on view\, Traver Gallery and Vetri present Glass Compendium\, a two-day special exhibition celebrating the past\, present\, and future of contemporary glass. On view at our waterfront space along the Ship Canal\, this presentation brings together works by artists who have shaped and continue to redefine the field\, including Dale Chihuly\, Lino Tagliapietra\, Sonja Blomdahl\, Ginny Ruffner\, Paul Marioni\, Nancy Callan\, Jen Elek\, Anna Mlasowsky\, John Kiley\, George William Bell\, Manolo Aguilera\, Andi Kovel\, Jason Christian\, and Cedric Mitchell. \nThis focused collection offers a rare opportunity to explore decades of innovation in studio glass through the lens of two galleries with deep roots in the field.\n \nGlasscape & Glass Compendium will be on view October 17–18\, 10 am–6 pm.

SUMMARY:During the Exposure: An exhibition by Winifred Westergard ♿
DESCRIPTION:Mini Mart City Park is ecstatic to host artist Winifred Westergard in an exhibition of new works on glass. Mini Mart City Park is a non-profit arts organization dedicated to arts\, education\, environmental action\, and community collaboration in the Duwamish Valley. Sitting on a transformed brownfield site\, MMCP is both cleaning the community we are a part of while serving it all the same. This exhibition will be open to the public every week through November 16\, Thursday through Sunday\, 12-5p. Come by and see us!\nAmbrotypes were a photographic technique from the mid-19th century\, one of many as the discoveries of photography were evolving. They were made using hand coated\, light sensitized\, “plates” of glass and exposed in large format cameras. Subjects were required to hold still for extended periods of time\, resulting in faces with no expression.\nWet plate is the term for a process which includes metal and glass substrates: aluminum for tintypes\, glass for ambrotypes. Each plate is coated with a light sensitizing collodion silver nitrate mixture just prior to exposure. The single plate is then loaded into a film holder\, quickly taken to the camera that has already been set up\, the exposure is made\, and then back into the darkroom to process the exposed plate before any drying occurs. What appears as the image after the short chemical development is always a marvel. \nWinifred Westergard is a Seattle based fine art and commercial photographer with degrees from the University of Washington and Cornish College of the Arts in Creative Writing\, Journalism and Art. Her art making foundation is rooted in the early processes of photography\, fully embracing the slow processes of 19th century photography. She is a visual creator with a strong base on human emotion and storytelling. She has managed the photography studio at Cornish College of the Arts since 1999 and has taught Photography and Portfolio Development through Summer@Cornish since 2003.

DESCRIPTION:In honor of Seattle Convention Center’s recent acquisition of her work\, we are delighted to offer an afternoon talk with artist Kait Rhoads. \nRhoads grew up on a ship in the Caribbean\, where her deep curiosity for biological systems began. Since moving to the Northwest\, her fascination has grown to include coral colonies and kelp forests. The influence of aquatic life infuses her sculptures with animated forms\, sparkling surfaces\, and faceted exoskeletons. By weaving together hollow murrine\, slices of complex cane\, Rhoads constructs complicated artworks that take months and years to create.
